Justin Trudeau will become Prime Minister of Canada after the Liberal Party captured majority government in Canada's federal elections.

The longest ever Canadian federal election campaign culminated in an impressive victory for the Liberal party. Early polls indicated that the Liberals trailed behind the Conservatives and NDP but Trudeau and the Liberals won over many voters in the tail end of the campaign.

Trudeau attributed the victory to a campaign of hope, positivity and the need for change.

Justin Trudeau makes history by becoming the first Canadian Prime Minister to follow in the footsteps of his father.

The available 338 ridings were won as follows:

184 - Liberal Party
99 - Conservative Party
44 - New Democratic Party
10 - Bloc Quebecois
1 - Green Party

Stephen Harper is expected to step down as the leader of the Conservative Party after 10 years as Prime Minister.
